The Warmouth is a stocky, sunfish-like fish with a large mouth, often extending to below the eye. They are ambush predators, typically found lurking near cover such as logs, vegetation, and rocky areas in slow-moving waters.

- Mottled brown or olive green with dark, vertical bars or blotches. They have reddish-brown eyes and a dark blotch on the operculum (gill cover).
