The Mayan Cichlid is a laterally compressed fish with an oval body shape. They are aggressive and territorial, especially during breeding season, and are known for their rapid reproduction rates.

- Variable, but typically olive green to yellowish-brown with darker vertical bars along the sides. They often have a prominent dark spot (ocellus) on the caudal peduncle.
