Channel catfish are characterized by their deeply forked tail, whisker-like barbels, and scattered black spots on their body (though spots may be absent in older individuals). They are opportunistic feeders and are most active at night.

Bluish-gray to olive-brown on the back and sides, with a white or silvery belly. Younger fish typically have more distinct black spots.

Widespread throughout the eastern and central United States, and has been introduced to other regions.
